　　The birth control method you choose should suit your temperament and lifestyle. In order to make an informed decision, you must ask yourself some important questions. For instance, are you looking for a long or short-term method of birth control? Are you in a stable relationship or do you plan on having multiple partners? Do you want a method that also protects against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)? Are you committed enough to remember to take medications on time? Do you smoke or have any serious health problems? Are you prepared for the responsibility if you do become pregnant?

　　I am planning to start using the pill so that my boyfriend and I don't have to worry about unintended pregnancy. Do we still need to use a back-up form of birth control like a condom just to be sure?

　　Though you have involved in a committed relationship and have decided to start taking the pill, a backup method of birth control, such as the condom, is still necessary until your body adjusts to the pill’s hormones and you’re accustomed to taking your pill every day. If your healthcare provider prescribes a combination birth control pill, that is, one containing two hormones, estrogen and progestin, there are two methods of starting: Day-One Start and Sunday Start. If you start taking your pill on Day One of your menstrual period (e.g. first day of bleeding), you will be protected against pregnancy from the first day. However, I suggest using a backup method of contraception for your first month until you get used to remembering to take the pill every day. Many women prefer to start taking the pill on the first Sunday after their period begins. In this case, you need to use a backup method of birth control for the first seven days. If the first day of your menstrual cycle happens to be on a Sunday, then you’re protected from Day One. Again, I suggest using a backup method of contraception for your first month until you get used to remembering to take the pill every day. Always begin by taking the first pill in the packet, and ensure you take each pill at the same time every day. Taken as directed, the combined pill is greater than 99.9 percent effective at preventing pregnancy. Your healthcare provider may prescribe the progestin-only pill, also known as the mini-pill. In this case, you need to use a backup method of birth control for the first month. The mini-pill is 90 to 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy if taken at the same time every day. If you are unsure of the formula you taking, consult your healthcare provider.

　　Remember, the pill doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), so if you aren’t in a committed relationship, you should continue using a condom.

　　如果你们有确定的性关系，并决定服用避孕药的话，在你适应避孕药阶段仍需要避孕套等辅助避孕措施。如果医生处方的是复方避孕药，则含有两种激素成分，即雌、孕激素。有两种服用方法：第一天服用法和星期日服用法。
